5 Technology Trends Transforming the Fashion Industry

   The innovations taking place at the intersection of fashion and technology are profoundly amazing and transformative. In many respects, the fashion industry today bears little resemblance to that of a decade ago—and will change even more in the decade ahead.

   Legendary businessman Peter Drucker famously said, ”Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window.” He’s right, which is why I’m not going to try to predict the future here.
  I am, however, going to energize your imagination with five trends that will help create that unpredictable future—trends that are taking shape right now, that Fashion GPS is tracking closely, and with which all of us in the fashion industry will need to grapple in the years ahead

1. Wearable Technology Blurs the Line Between Tech and Fashion

  What it’s about: The most obvious examples of wearable technology today are Google Glass and a variety of smartwatches—but these are rudimentary first steps into the realm of wearable tech.
  What happens, for example, when smart fabrics (you may already be aware of the San Francisco conference in April focusing on this trend) enable fashions to incorporate sensors that emit aromas or interact with the environment in different ways? Imagine fashions that alter their color or texture based on surrounding conditions of light, heat or sound.
  Or, for another example, imagine fashions that seamlessly and invisibly incorporate biofeedback to support an individual’s health and wellness. Would you like some smartclothes to go with your smartwatch and smartphone?
  Why it matters: The days of fabric as a strictly static resource are coming to a close—the days of fabric as an active (and interactive) resource are just beginning.

2. Fashion Week Becomes 52 Fashion Weeks Each Year

  What it’s about: Digital Fashion Week is something of a curiosity now, but it’s the beginning of what could be a sea change in the fashion world.
  Just as the internet and the 24/7 news cycle have been laying waste to weekly news magazines and daily newspapers, the hyper-networked fashion world to come is likely to transform any given Fashion Week into worldwide industry event that lasts 365 days a year.
  This transformation will probably occur in stages, the first of which is global participation in local events. Live streaming of runway shows is already commonplace, and the impact of the social media component of those streams is only beginning to be understood and leveraged in a way that can benefit fashion brands.
 Why it matters: Consider 1,000 people in New York and 1,000 people in San Francisco viewing an Amsterdam Fashion Week event. A new product hits the runway and the buzz in San Francisco is off the meter, while the reaction in New York is ho-hum at best. The retail implications for the brand presenting that product—and understanding the buzz both quantitatively and qualitatively—could make or break the product launch. That’s a single data point. Now imagine a flood of data points 365 days a year.

3. 3D Printing Means Everyone Becomes A One-Person Factory

  What it’s about: If you haven’t heard much about 3D printing,    brace yourself: Imagine having a printer in your home or office that, instead of putting ink to paper, actually creates three-dimensional solid objects. Print a pair of shoes? A handbag? A dress? Yep: All of the above … and more.
  According to Forbes, 3D printing will be a $3.1 billion industry by 2016 and a $5.2 billion industry by 2020. I think those predictions are too conservative.
  To understand how 3D printing will transform the fashion industry in the years ahead, compare and contrast life today with life before computers and smartphones and the internet. That’s the kind of transformative change that will be brought about by easily affordable 3D printing.
  Over the past 20 years, the near-ubiquity of computers has democratized information and media. Publishing and broadcasting, once available to just a privileged few, are now available to anyone with an idea and a laptop or tablet—and that idea can be made available to anyone on the planet with the click of a mouse.
Why it matters: Think about designers in offices, apartments and garages developing accessory prototypes—or engaging in full-on production without any middleman whatsoever. Or imagine designers creating scale models of—well, of models wearing the designs they’ve created; how might those scale models be used to popularize and sell fashion? The possibilities are endless. The impacts will be enormous.

4. Smart Use of Metadata Will Give Brands A Competitive Edge

  What it’s about: You’ve been hearing plenty in the news lately about metadata and the NSA, and you’re probably familiar with metadata as it relates to web pages. But consider other kinds of metadata.
  How customers and potential customers interact with online product databases (GPS Styles, for one example) can reveal patterns of interest and intent that can suggest which products have the greatest possibility for success.
  Gathering metadata is the easy part: Every digital action leaves a footprint, and capturing those footprints is a relatively minor issue. However, as everything that everyone in the industry does takes on a digital component, the volume of data capable of being captured is incalculable. This begs the question of how to make sense of it all.
  Why it matters: Knowing how to sift through the haystack of information to identify needles of insight that can help weave profitable new strategies—that’s where the smart use of data-mining technologies coupled with strategic analysis will drive new avenues of success for fashion brands large and small worldwide.

5. Technology Will Make Everything You Know Today Obsolete in 10 Years

  What it’s about: Moore’s Law states that the processing power of computers will double every two years. The term originated around 1970, and it’s held fairly true since then (though some analyses of Moore’s Law say the doubling occurs every 18 months).
  In other words: A decade from now, the processing power of the average computer—or smartphone—will be 32 times stronger than it is today.
  Imagine the seismic shifts that power will create: Those needles I referred to above might be easier for the entrepreneur to find. The digital capabilities of today’s biggest fashion brands will be dwarfed by the startup brands of 2024. The technology trends starting to emerge today will accelerate exponentially over the coming decade.
  Why it matters: The truly successful fashion brands of tomorrow will be those that can not only recognize and cope with the pace of change, but embrace it. They will be aware of both the megatrends and microtrends in our industry—and will be flexible enough to strategically act on them with bold conviction.

Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design


The course is offered in two different ways:

• ITALIAN BACHELOR OF ART DEGREE RECOGNIZED BY MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education)
• INTERNATIONAL BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM

The Accademia Italiana in Rome offers a three-year Bachelor's Degree course inFashion Design. The school has a long history in this sector, with over thirty years of activities involving young designers. The Accademia is undoubtedly an educational leader in fashion design. The instructors are chosen among professionals with significant experience to guarantee continuous contact with the real world of fashion. Students develop their creations from all points of view: artistic, creative and technical.
One special aspect of the Accademia Italiana in Rome is its orientation toward the industrial as well as creative type of clothing production typical of high fashion, drawing from the know-how always present in this city.
There are two options for pursuing this degree. Students can select the program that best matches their needs.
• THREE YEAR BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN FASHION DESIGN LEADING TO A DEGREE RECOGNIZED BY THE ITALIAN MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (MIUR - MINISTERO DELL'ISTRUZIONE, UNIVERSITA' E RICERCA)
This course of study, approved by the Italian Ministry of Education (Ministero dell'Istruzione, Università e Ricerca, D.L. n. 76 del 04/02/2013), is part of the Ministry's Department of Design and Applied Arts in the School of Artistic Design for Industry and includes various types educational activities related to diverse disciplines that contribute to the student's professional training.
• THREE YEAR INTERNATIONAL BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN FASHION DESIGN 
This three-year program is divided into six academic semesters. Students who have previously completed coursework in this field of study may request admission into a more advanced semester.
Students who complete the program will be awarded an international degree. The program unites the Accademia Italiana's 30 years of experience in Italian fashion, art and design with training of an international orientation. The program will provide students not only with valuable knowledge and skills but also a global perspective and approach toward the international market that will serve them well in their future professions.
Students who complete any of the three Fashion Design Bachelor's degree programs are welcome to enroll in the Fashion as Art Master's program at Accademia Italiana in Florence.
During the three years, students display their creations in the school's fashion show, a unique opportunity for the young designers to gain international exposure.

Advanced Fashion Design and Technology

Advanced Fashion Design and Technology
 Is the manufacturing process related to fashion which integrates the newest technologies.
CAD  
  It specifically refers not only to the design process, but furthermore to the manufacturing, which is defined as being "advanced". It utilizes CAD, to patternmake and design. The first CAD package for clothing came out in 1985, which significantly helped to decrease inefficiencies in making and readjusting panel patterns. Since 1985, computer clothing design software packages have made tremendous advancements.

Main functions

  • Draping
  • Grading;
  • Fashion drawing;
  • Fashion trends and forecasting;
  • Trade sketching;
  • Embellishing garments;
  • Using electronic fashion design tools;
  • Interacting/networking with the fashion design industry
  • Quality assurance

Tech Design


  Another way that technology has contributed to the fashion industry is in the manufacturing process. Many garments today are produced through outsourcing in other countries. A way to do this efficiently and effectively is through Tech Packs. Tech Packs contain 9 pages of information that help the manufacturer communicate with the designer. Here is the order of the pages:
  • A summary page with a drawn example of the garment (usually using Adobe Illustrator)
  • Construction details (in-depth details of different pieces to the garment)
  • Dimensions (in-depth measurements of garment)
  • Order of Operation (order of construction)
  • Component (list of different pieces/trims involved)
  • Cost Section (cost and quantity of materials)
  • Label Section (illustration and description of tags/labels on garment)
  • Shipping (manner in which product is packaged and shipped)
  • History (any changes prior to finishing)

DataBases
   The fashion industry has been using databases to aggregate and organize information specific to the industry. Below are some examples of such databases.
1. Mix-and-Match databases
The mix-and-match database is a database that is being used in Hong Kong. Traditionally, fashion companies depend on sales associates to complimentary clothing recommendations for customers. The mix-and-match database essentially does the same thing, but in a different way. In order to use this database all clothes in the store have to be tagged with a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag. In addition, each fitting room has to be equipped with a computer monitor. When a customer brings a clothing item with a RFID tag into the fitting room, the computer monitor will identify the garment, and display photographs of complementary items using the database.[1]>
2. Fashion Library databases
  An example of a useful database that is the National Fashion Institute of Fashion Technology's Virtual Fashion Library (VFL) in India. This database is specifically organized to meet the needs of India's fashion designers. The VFL's most useful tool is the its Fashion Image Inventory. The inventory includes three image banks: the Indian fashion museum, the virtual swatch library, and archives of fashion shows. The Indian fashion museum contains pictures and videos of Indian costumes and dress throughout various historical periods. The virtual swatch library includes a collection of fabrics from all over India which helps designers select fabrics and patterns made in India. The archives fashion show contains videos of India's top fashion runway shows.


Fashion Technology – Predictions For 2016

Fashion technology predictions, for the year to come.
We are living the times of digitisation. Times when the number of followers on social media – Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest – is more important, in securing a job in fashion, than your experience.
Times of unprecedented application of technology in fashion. The augmented and virtual reality, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, are slowly changing, or better said improving, the fashion industry as we know it.
A growing number of tech giants are seeking to seize the opportunity, pushing for partnerships in fashion, offering their expertise, tools and capabilities and also reignite their business models. Intel, for example, through active participation in the fashiontech landscape has revived its once very famous motto, “Intel Inside.” This time, inside smart fabrics and wearables rather than desktops and laptops.

Google+: Hanging between high fashion and technology

    These days, high fashion seems to rime with Eldorado for technology companies. Announcement of new partnerships between designers and tech firms, from Intel + Opening Ceremony to Fitbit + Tory Burch, keep coming in, making it evident these two industries will follow an ever-more intertwined path in the upcoming years. In January, the International Consumer Electronic Show (CES) displayed the full extent of the industry’s commitment to reach out more coherently to a style-driven consumer segment. From wearable computer devices (which haven’t been very conclusive so far) to immersive community experiences, tech firms are trying to tap into the fashion industry from all angles.     In a previous blog post, we briefly introduced the Skype Collaboration Project and its endeavour to connect the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs with established designers in the like of Victoria Beckham through its new group video call service.    And Google is not at rest either. Last Fall, the Internet giant concluded a partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to create an enhanced shopping experience where social media and e-commerce merge together in the form of a new app called Hangout On Air.     Developed both with retailers and consumers in mind, the Google+ application allows designers to engage directly with their targeted clientele through a live multi-person video shopping session. While chatting about the latest trends or must-have accessories of the season, designers can orient customers to a curated selection of products available for online purchasing via Google Shopping.     The video platform launched its series of live shopping events in October with no other than CFDA’s president Diane von Furstenberg. Fellow members of the Council, among which Rachel Zoe and Rebecca Minkoff, shortly followed in the footsteps of the famous businesswoman behind the eponymous label, giving selected die-hard customers a once in a lifetime opportunity to “hang out” with their beloved creators.     Needless to say, this kind of ad hoc project allows the tech industry to take its relationship with fashion a step further, like it does with various domains of interest. Despite these initiatives, forces is to admit that high fashion has made relatively less advancement in engaging in a new kind of dialogue with its consumers, especially when compared to other industries like advertising, for example.


Kinetic Energy in Fashion




                 When we walk, run or dance, our movement can be converted into electrical energy.  A small collection of enterprising inventors have taken the task of using clothing to capture this kinetic energy, then using it to power a watch, an mp3 player, even a mobile phone.  An industrial designer named Soledad Martin is working on a prototype to place kinetic energy harnesses in common shoes, allowing the wearer to charge a cell phone battery while they walk or run.  Recently, designer Rafael Rozenkranz has built a jogging suit with an embedded mp3 player that runs solely off the kinetic energy produced during a jog.  The technology isn’t necessarily new, but it is making its way into fashion more and more each decade.  One early example of kinetic energy in fashion was with kinetic watches, which have ran off the movement of the human body since the 1980s

Clothing technology

Clothing technology involves the manufacturing, materials, and design innovations that have been developed and used. The timeline of clothing and textiles technology includes major changes in the manufacture and distribution of clothing.
From clothing in the ancient world into modernity the use of technology has dramatically influenced clothing and fashion in the modern age. Industrialization brought changes in the manufacture of goods. In many nations, homemade goods craftedby hand have largely been replaced factory produced goods on assembly lines purchased in a by consumer culture. Innovations include man-made materials such as polyesternylon, and vinyl as well as features like zippers and velcro. The advent of advanced electronics has resulted in wearable technology being developed and popularized since the 1980s.
Design is an important part of the industry beyond utilitarian concerns and the fashion and glamour industries have developed in relation to clothing marketing and retailEnvironmental and human rights issues have also become considerations for clothing and spurred the promotion and use of some natural materials such as bamboo that are considered environmentally friendly.

Like any other art, the long-term trends in fashion are often driven by advancements in technology.  New materials merge with the old and new needs drive innovation while fashion slowly evolves.  Which of today’s trends are driving the wearables of tomorrow?   Join us as we explore the high tech fashion of the future– from energy to protection to information directly within the clothing we wear.


Protection in Fashion: Armor and Information

Bike Helmet Airbag 1When we enter dangerous endeavors, from biking through the city to fighting fires, the clothes we wear can help keep us safe.  Take the airbag for cyclists, for example, as created by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin.  This neck-worn system pops open with a fully-inflated airbag ready to absorb the shocks of impact.  When not expanded, the system provides for greater visibility (and avoids the stigma of those less-than-stylish bicycle helmets).  To protect us against a greater extreme, designers Ashwin Rajan and Kevin Cannon developed what they call the Frontline Gloves, a system of networked gloves that allow firefighters to communicate with simple hand gestures.  Use a specific hand signal to let your comrades know to evacuate, to recover a discovered victim or that everything is A-ok.


Environmentally Responsive Fashion


 The environment around us is changing, and our fashion can respond to that in artful or informative ways.  Take for example the climate dress by Diffus, a system that monitors nearby air pollution levels and provides feedback in the form of LED light.  When the air is heavily polluted, the lights within this dress pulsate quickly to alert the wearer and those nearby.  A similar system by designers Nien Lam and Susan Ngo also monitors the air quality, yet doing so with a simple color change in the lungs on the front of the shirt.  Last, the work of Stijn Ossevoort is less functional but it remains beautiful– a dress that lights up as gusts of wind pass by.
