Nowadays, a growing number of children spend much more time on modern games than on traditional games. Some educationalists and parents tend to worry about this trend because they firmly believe that traditional children’s games do better in terms of developing a whole variety of skills. Personally, I am of the same opinion.
Admittedly, for children, modern games provide an environment that allows for computer skills enhancement. Through playing electronic games, especially online computer games, enthusiastic young players are rapidly familiar with how to send instant messages or emails to other players, how to get information about games from the Internet, how to install, update and uninstall the game program, and so forth. However, all of these are limited in the domain of computer. It is widely accepted that playing traditional games contributes to improving young people’s social skills. Traditional children’s games involve human interactions in real world instead of human-machine interactions in virtual world, thus providing opportunities for children to learn ways of effective communication with both languages as well as gestures. In addition, traditional games are usually played in groups. It allows chances for children to experience different talents, skills and backgrounds from all other players. This experience can help children understand the need to respect others and learn how to cooperate with kinds of people. Away from these serious concerns, a high proportion of traditional games consist of physical activities, which play a significant role in developing children’s sports skills. We often see that children are sitting in front of and staring at the screen when they are playing modern games. In contrast, the majority of traditional games encourage an active lifestyle. To take the traditional children’s beanbag game as an example, one group of children need to run all the time to avoid to be hit by he beanbag, while the opposite group of children should continuously pick up and toss the beanbag to each other to hit their target.
In conclusion, it is traditional games that provide a play-centered approach to the next generation to develop a wide range of skills. Modern games are of shortcomings in this respect. Parents and teachers should ensure that their children or students learn to enjoy various traditional games, rather than just collapsing in front of a screen.
